On December 10, South Korean game developer Shift Up announced that its CEO, Kim Hyung-tae, received a presidential commendation at the "2025 Republic of Korea Content Awards" held at COEX in Seoul for his outstanding contributions to the development of the game industry.
The Korea Content Awards, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea, is the most prestigious content award in South Korea, aiming to recognize companies and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the content industry.
Kim Hyung-tae was awarded the Presidential Commendation primarily for his outstanding creativity accumulated over many years at the forefront of Korean game development, as well as his contributions to continuously strengthening the global competitiveness of Korean game IPs since the establishment of Shift Up.
The award citation specifically highlighted the contributions of two of its works:
Stellar Blade: As a console game developed in South Korea, this title achieved outstanding commercial and technological success, and was officially praised as "proving the world the potential of Korean console games".
Goddess of Victory: NIKKE: This game, with its excellent gameplay and artistic polish, popularized the anime-style game genre and became a global hit. In 2023, it received the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism's commendation at the Content Awards for its overseas expansion.
CEO Kim Hyung-tae played important roles in both works, especially serving as director for "Sword Star." Both works received high praise for their high level of completion in multiple areas, including story, art style, and sound effects.
It is understood that Shift Up is currently actively developing a sequel to "Sword Star" and preparing several global projects, including the new IP "Project Spirit" which has signed a publishing agreement with Tencent.
Kim Hyung-tae and Shift Up successfully broke into the console game market with "Sword Star," shattering the long-standing reliance of the Korean game industry on mobile games. This signifies that the Korean game industry has found a new growth point in global competition.
Can Shift Up's success model serve as a template for other Asian game companies entering the console market?
