My thoughts on "Door to Door" - Never Give Up

In this era of rapid technological advancement, a stubborn and resilient disabled man has dedicated his life to diligent struggle. This is Billy Paul, the protagonist depicted in the film "Door to Door." The film, presented in documentary style, portrays his life, the experiences and burdens of a disabled person, reflecting the rapid development of society, the warmth of humanity, and inspiring perseverance.

Billy Paul, born with a brain injury caused by forceps during delivery, was undeterred by hardship or ridicule. His mother taught him the most important lessons in life—patience and perseverance—enabling him to face rejection and indifference with a smile. He used his love and determination to inspire everyone around him, gaining their trust and acceptance. As an adult, with his mother's support, he bravely joined Watkins Company as a salesman. During his sales career, he faced doubts about his abilities, but he didn't give up. He was rejected by cold words, but he didn't give up. He was unfairly complained about by customers, but he still didn't give up. He always held onto one belief—that he could support himself through work. He spoke to people with kindness and friendliness, and everyone he interacted with was influenced by him, becoming his customers. He also fostered harmony in his neighborhood. His spiritual pillar came from his mother; she gave him motivation and taught him patience and perseverance, because he knew that perseverance leads to victory.

However, life is subject to birth, aging, illness, and death. His mother passed away not long after he started working. Losing his pillar of support, however, spurred him to even greater efforts. Due to leg problems, doctors advised him to quit his job and apply for disability benefits, but he stubbornly found an assistant and persevered. Through his sincerity and kindness, his career flourished, and he finally earned the title of best salesperson—the greatest reward in his life.

As the 1990s arrived, technology advanced rapidly, and traditional marketing methods were replaced by computers. Everything foreshadowed Bill's impending retirement. However, the stubborn Bill proved the importance of traditional marketing methods with his actions. He perfectly integrated his career and his life. His life was a life of struggle and a life of pursuing dreams.
The spirit Bill embodies is precisely what we lack. We are not disabled, yet we feel ashamed in his presence. A disabled person's life was so difficult, yet he accomplished something great. And what are we, the able-bodied, doing?

Perhaps it's precisely because we are physically healthy that we don't feel the hardships of life, and without pressure, we become complacent and decadent. But a person's life shouldn't be wasted. If we do nothing, what is the meaning of life? Even if our abilities are limited, we should do our best to find our right place and embody the meaning of our lives in our work, contributing to the progress of humanity—that is a remarkable life. We don't need to do anything earth-shattering; we just need to start with the things around us and do our own jobs well. When we feel lazy or encounter difficulties, we should think of Bill Gates, and all difficulties will seem insignificant.
Nothing in this world is difficult if you set your mind to it. With our perseverance, we will surely reap the rewards of victory.
