Some facts about Shopify – welcome to join

I have just finished my first week at Shopify. The onboarding experience is consistent with the interview, and it is still very comfortable. I think many people like me are not very familiar with Shopify. I will write an article to introduce it briefly, and also give a shout out. We are vigorously recruiting people, and everyone is welcome to join! (If you need internal recommendation, you can send me a private message)

Company situation

Since its listing in 2015, Shopify has been developing rapidly. Its stock price has soared from 28 to 1,500, and its market value has also risen to 130B, ranking second in the North American e-commerce field. Unlike other service e-commerce companies, Shopify mainly focuses on merchants and solves their problems. The company's goal is to make commerce better for everyone. Many people may have the same impression as me, thinking that shopify is a platform for building e-commerce websites, but in fact shopify has already been deployed in areas surrounding e-commerce, such as logistics networks, payment systems, and customer-oriented SHOPs.

After Shopify sets its future goals, it will need a large number of outstanding talents to join. It aims to recruit 2021 programmers in 2021 and will continue to expand in 2022. Although the team is no longer like a startup, it is still very flat. Each engineer can bring a great impact to the team and the company.

company culture

Many friends who have just graduated and are eager to find a job may not necessarily care about company culture. Indeed, for those who are just looking for a job, having a satisfactory job is more important than anything else. But as time goes by, the company culture will change you subtly. In a good company culture, you will be happy to work and grow, and you can make more friends. On the contrary, it may be a torment every day, which is very detrimental to your physical and mental development.

I have mentioned several shopify interview experiences in previous articles. One week after joining, this excellent experience continues. Although I haven’t experienced the company culture in depth yet, I can feel it from some aspects.

Before talking about my own experience, I recommend everyone to check the shopify company rating. I personally recommend checking it on the anonymous network blind, which is relatively accurate for the time being.

No Asshole

I was actually quite surprised when I saw this word. After all, it was so explicit, especially since Shopify put it first in the file. Whether it is mentioned repeatedly in interviews, offers or on boarding. I believe that no one likes asshole, and no one likes drama. It is very comfortable to reject these in principle.

Trust

Trust is easy to say, but difficult to do. Shopify implements Trust in all aspects, and you can experience from various details that the company absolutely trusts its employees. I originally wanted to give an example, but I feel it involves some internal information, so I won’t mention it for now. Everyone has the experience of being trusted. If the default is trust, you can easily feel it.

Engineering Culture

I haven’t had a lot of experience in this area, but judging from this week’s onboarding, it’s still very good. For example, no matter what department people join the company, they will undergo development training. The purpose is to let everyone understand how to think about problems from an engineer's perspective, thereby reducing communication obstacles. The best example of this kind of obstacle is sales and product communication between technical personnel and non-technical people. Everyone should have personal experience.

Whether you are a novice or an experienced developer, dev onboarding provides step-by-step instructions, from writing the first line of code to how to test and run pipelines. In addition, Shopify pays special attention to pair programming. It has been mentioned in many places that this is a very good atmosphere. You can also find a video of CEO Tobi pair programming at a certain event online, which is very interesting.

Fully Remote

Shopify announced Digital by Design last year to become a fully remote company, which also means that you can work for Shopify from any corner of the world without losing your salary. Of course, the income of employees in different regions is different.

What should I do if I want to meet my colleagues in the office when I am fully remote? The current plan is to retain several offices, and the team will decide to travel to an office together as needed. For example, each quarter's planning allows everyone to fly to the same office for a week. Of course, this is not mandatory. Shopify has offices in many countries. I’m curious if I can choose offices outside of North America after the epidemic is over.

In addition, the company also has a particularly good system. You can use 90 days a year to work anywhere in the world. Chinese people can use these 90 days to return to China. Working from China should be very comfortable.

Work Life Balance

I haven't started working yet, so I can't comment, but judging from the online ratings, it's similar to my previous company Capital One, so it should be pretty good. During the interview this summer, they had Friday off. It seemed like they only worked 4 days every summer vacation. In addition, there is also the No meeting day policy, everything looks very good.

personal experience

I chose Shopify largely because of the excellent impression during the interview. If you ask anyone who has interviewed you, they will tell you that the interviewers at Shopify are extremely nice. There is also a lot of relevant information online.

This is my first week working at Shopify. The three days are regular onboarding + the subsequent dev onboarding. The details of each day will be sent to everyone on the same day. All aspects are arranged in a very orderly manner. In the next two weeks, there will be dev onboarding and team onboarding. I don’t know how other companies do it, but I have never experienced onboarding for three consecutive weeks. It is very orderly, and you can see solid step-by-step steps from the full calendar.

Although Shopify's technology stack is ruby on rail and react, their infra is very good, and the dev onboarding is very detailed, basically introducing everyone as a technical novice, which makes people like me who have never been exposed to ruby on rail feel particularly relieved.

Generally speaking, Shopify implements employee care into practice, which can be felt in many details. It makes people very motivated to work hard for the company, and all kinds of logistical support work are also done very well. In the first week after joining, I felt that I made the right choice.

Salary and benefits

You will see many people complaining about Shopify’s low wages online, but they changed their salary structure in June this year, and now it is basically similar to that of most technology companies. In addition, because Shopify is a Canadian company, it used to follow Canadian standards, so you can’t find much information about the United States online, and its global expansion has only happened in the past two years.

Apart from salary, there are no shortage of other benefits, so I won’t mention them one by one.

Questions for brushing up questions

Shopify doesn't really value quizzes. The technical interview is called pair programming. You will solve technical problems with the interviewer. Of course, the questions are similar to the quizzes, but it pays more attention to communication and practical processing skills. This difficulty is about medium.

Referral

I recommend that you experience Shopify’s interview process for yourself so that you can better understand the company. The positions are in:https://www.shopify.com/careers, if you want to know more or need referral, you can send me a private message.

Recently, some new grads found that there are only senior positions online. Shopify's new grads now use dev degree camps hire. You can check the official website for details.

Hello Jing! Thank you for this article. Can you still recommend it now? Or do you know anyone who can help? I am currently working as a senior SWE at Google, and I am attracted by the fact that I can return to my country to work within 90 days.
