While playing the Uncharted expansion, Lost Regret, over the weekend, I discovered that the graphics settings indicated my TV didn't support HDR. This really bothered me; my newly purchased Samsung 8000 series high-end 4K TV couldn't support it! I decided to investigate. I found many mysteries involved, or rather, it was a new field where standards weren't yet standardized.
Let me first explain 4K HDR. Many affordable 4K phones on the market (under 10,000 RMB) don't support HDR. The 4K they refer to is just the first generation of 4K resolution, while HDR refers to a high color gamut at 4K resolution (look up the meanings of these two terms online). Having experienced it firsthand, the impact of a high color gamut is truly remarkable. 4K simply stretches the image and increases the resolution, allowing it to be displayed on a larger screen. A high color gamut, on the other hand, allows you to perceive more colors and a more realistic picture.
First, let me explain how to tell if HDR is being output. Go to the PS4 settings, then Sound and Picture, select Picture, and there you'll find the HDR mode. Try selecting Auto. If that doesn't work, it will prompt that your TV does not support HDR.
My situation is a bit more complicated; I have a cable box and optical fiber for the speakers, but I was still able to troubleshoot the problem. If your TV is HDR, but your PS4 Pro display cannot output HDR, please use the following steps to check:
- Remove the PS VR connection box and output the PS4 signal directly to the TV (that's why I did this).
- Check if the HDMI cable is 2.0. If it is 1.0, it is not supported (the original Sony PS4 Pro cable is supported).
- Is there a cable box between the TV and the device? If so, check the instructions and connect it to a port that supports 4K HDR output (Samsung's boxes all support this).
- Open your TV settings, go to Picture Settings, and then Advanced. There you'll find HDR settings. Enable HDR for all HDMI ports (I don't know why this is a redundant setting). Note that this is for Samsung TVs; other TVs may require you to refer to the instructions. However, any TV that supports HDR should have similar settings.
After following each of the above steps, you can go to the PS4 settings to check if HDR is supported. By checking step by step, you can solve the problem.
