[Recommended] Some information about Google China team interviews

Some time ago, a recruiter from Google Asia Pacific found me on LinkedIn. Recruiter works in Singapore and is mainly responsible for team recruitment in the Asia-Pacific region. After a brief understanding of the situation, he offered me a position at Google China and asked some simple technical questions after confirming my interest (the sudden question was unexpected, but it is basic computer knowledge. It mainly checks whether there is experience. It is not particularly difficult. By the way, Singaporeans' English is a bit cute). After the phone call, he referred me to the domestic HR, who was very kind and provided a lot of useful information:

Google China mainly deals with Ads, providing services to Chinese companies that intend to go overseas. This time I was offered two positions, one was Technical Solutions Consultant and the other was Customer Solutions Engineer. It was difficult to tell them apart from the job descriptions. After chatting with the other party’s HR, I learned the difference between the two:

Technical Solutions Consultant mainly cooperates with sales and customers to provide solutions to customers. 20% of the time is coding, mainly writing demos of some products, leaning towards the front end, and 20% will be spent on travel. The Customer Solutions Engineer is mainly responsible for back-end development and spends more than 50% of his time writing code. He is a member of the technical engineering team.

Although this position is not a purely technical position, it is particularly suitable for people with business ideas. Their technical requirements are not low, but they are more focused on business ideas. After all, they are helping customers come up with solutions, which requires relatively high comprehensive capabilities. I personally feel that this position can contact a lot of customers and establish long-term relationships. It is very suitable for people who want to move out of technical positions and have ideas to build their own resources.

The interview aspect is much more complicated. There will be 4-5 rounds. Unlike the technical interview here in the United States, which only has 1-2 rounds, most of the interviews here are Open/Behavior Questions, which are mainly divided into the following directions:

  1. Technical issues, if you are a Solutions Consultant, then there are three main directions:
    1. They are network-related and front-end issues, such as how to improve speed, API and overall system design issues.
    2. Database questions mainly examine data processing and analysis capabilities
    3. Code issues + JS issues
  2. Product-related issues, including advertising products, and customers (Hong Kong, Taiwan, APP, Game and Ecommerce)
  3. Customer management issues, mainly how to cooperate with the Product Team, Engineer Team and Sales Team to do a good job

The main directions of investigation are:

  1. Role-related knowledge, that is, the above
  2. How do you think (problem solving skills), mainly depends on whether it is a culture match
  3. Namely Leadership
  4. Googleyness is mainly open questions, such as: If you are the CEO, which two products should Google choose to develop in the next 3-5 years? The main idea for solving the problem is to clarify the question with the interviewer, establish a position, and then analyze it layer by layer from the top down, with careful and hierarchical thinking.

Overall, this position is particularly suitable for technical + business talents. They need talents with technical development experience and leadership to supplement the team.

[Important] They are still recruiting people. Friends who are interested can contact me and I can recommend them to you.

I think food, family, and more development opportunities are the reasons why most people choose to return. In addition, these people’s backgrounds in China are not bad.

The working environment in domestic companies is too harsh. They live in ant nests, eat and drink with the five poisons, and the employers are picky, oppressive, disgusting, and work endless overtime. I really don’t understand why many people come back, unless they want to start a business.

@quartbeen This is the siege. Many people with ideals want to make a career when they go back. Life will come to an end if they stay abroad. Life is only once. Who doesn’t want to try their ideals and do something meaningful? The domestic problems are market imperfections and vicious competition. But many people who take the initiative to return to China do so because of opportunities. If the opportunity is good, life problems will not be a problem. Moreover, it is actually not that serious. Many of them are exaggerated because of the pressure.

@Jake TaoThat's because people who have stayed abroad generally make a lot of money, right? To be honest, the little money many IT workers in China earn can barely cover their food and clothing. If foreign countries can provide higher wages, social security, and a certain degree of personal dignity, why should people who are not particularly capable come back?

@quartbeen Earnings in China are not less than those abroad:), and besides money, the treatment in other aspects is pretty good, and those who are capable can perform better. In fact, foreign countries are not as good as you think. It is recommended to come out and experience them for comparison.

@Jake TaoUm? A good programmer in China can only earn 400,000 yuan before tax. It is very difficult to break through 500,000 yuan. In the United States, it usually costs more than 0,000, right?

@quartbeen The better prices in the United States range from 200,000 to 500,000 U.S. dollars, while the better ones in China range from 1 million to 3 million yuan.
Note that when I say "better" I don't mean most people. Most people in the United States probably only have tens of thousands of dollars (the average middle-class person I remember is 50,000 or 60,000 dollars), and there are many programmers with around 100,000 dollars. Don’t forget that a meal in the United States costs 10-20 knives, while in China it costs 10-30 renminbi, which is a 6-fold difference. If you are interested, you can check the information and calculate carefully.
So those who are not "better" (perhaps the top 1% elite) may not be as well off economically as they are in China? (Of course the social system is better)
Why do the "better ones" want to return to China? I mentioned their motivations before.

@Jake TaoI did some random calculations: 500,000 domestically, 430,000 after tax, 30,000 to 40,000 for food and accommodation, but in the end I got less than 400,000. The United States has 150,000, 100,000 after tax, and 30,000 for food and accommodation. Is there still 70,000 left? Moreover, you have to work overtime frequently, watch the boss's face, and avoid taking the blame, not to mention the abnormal housing prices. It's probably better to go abroad.

@quartbeen U.S. taxes. . . higher than China. . . 150,000 is enough to get 8 or 9. . If you live in a place with high wages, such as Silicon Valley, a good one-bedroom apartment may cost US,000. Including water and electricity insurance, it is about US,000 per year. Food costs 1,000-2,000 per person per month, which is about more than US,000-20,000 per year. Life is not just about food, drink and housing, but also a lot of other expenses. Remember that the cost of living here is calculated at 4-5 times, so you need to convert it.

China has some problems, but what about America’s racial discrimination and discrimination against Chinese people? There are many examples of Chinese people being bullied by Indians in companies. We are all human beings. There is no distinction between heaven and hell, only whether it is suitable for you. Many problems cannot be solved by going abroad.

lz can consider forgetting the direction of headhunting in the future and pushing domestic engineers to work in Europe and the United States.

@Jake TaoYou have an obvious survivor bias. If you are in the country, you will find that most people want to go out, but they are limited to their own abilities (technical and language). And those who come back are not necessarily much better, such as office politics. Although they are all Chinese, they are also divided into gangs and factions. If you are on the wrong team, you will be bullied, which is no different from being bullied by Ah San. It's just that if you are bullied by the Chinese and can't find the comfort of racial discrimination, you will be even more sad when the time comes.

@Jason What you said is indeed correct, but the main trade off is: do you want to stay like this for the rest of your life, or do you want to do something of your own in the opportunity market? If you want to do things, those problems are not big problems.

@Jake TaoThe domestic demographic dividend has gradually disappeared, and the golden era has passed.

@Jason It is still an immature market. There are always more opportunities in immature markets than in mature markets. The demographic dividend is largely due to the Internet industry.
