The rumors that have been escalating in recent weeks partially became reality a few hours ago. Not only that, the official announcement from behind the Microsoft Xbox console revealed that… a next-generation version of the console is in development (thus silencing all those claiming the Series X/S series is the final version), but most importantly, it also confirmed speculation about supported games.
The new head of Xbox announced the news on the official X platform. Asha SharmaShe recently succeeded the legendary Phil Spencer. In her short post, she specifically wrote that this development of the next-generation Xbox console, codenamed "Project Helix," promises top-tier performance and simultaneous support for Xbox and PC gaming. This could very well be the most fundamental change since the birth of consoles. If the next-generation Xbox can successfully become a hybrid of console and PC features, and support game stores like Steam, it will largely eliminate the barriers to exclusive games between platforms.
So, if you're like me, frustrated by not being able to play The Last of Us on Xbox, then with the arrival of… next-gen consoles, this should be feasible for the next generation, as the consoles themselves can run PC versions of the game. Rumors have been circulating for months that Xbox is planning something similar, and Sony recently reportedly decided to stop porting PS games to PC in the future precisely because those games might not be playable on Xbox. So, it's great to hear this now, after Microsoft confirmed the plan.
Unfortunately, we can only speculate on when we'll see the new Xbox, as Microsoft hasn't announced an official date yet. The most common guess is 2027, though this could be delayed due to development issues, computer shortages, or other reasons. A RAM-type device, etc., are also possible. However, if Microsoft can successfully complete this plan, in a few years we'll have a machine under our TVs capable of running both Xbox and PC games simultaneously. I dare say PlayStation will suffer a major blow, and Xbox will face huge trouble. The Xbox One will fully utilize its enormous potential stemming from: Microsoft behind me. As a long-time Xbox fan, I'm really looking forward to the days to come!
